I’m alive! I had quite a refreshing fashion sabbatical, full of meditation, wearing the same shirt two days in a row, barefootedness, beach trips, rave clothes (interesting, but not something I want to be blogging about), funny party costumes (turns out dressing like a vampire is incredibly easy for me), not buying a single item of clothing for 3 months, and my first pair of Nike Dunks.

But I’m glad to be back, and after a lot of contemplation, it doesn’t really seem like I feel any differently about fashion. It’s more of an innate personal reconsideration that I’m still unable to put into words, but I think it will actually be good for my blogging.

I’m feeling pretty enthusiastic about reworking my wardrobe a bit (always a confusing and daunting task, but more on that later), and I have some incredibly exciting news! I’m moving to Paris! I’m leaving in just a few short weeks, and I’m going to be there for an indefinite amount of time (but probably less than a year, hah). I’m SO excited to live in a new country, go to museums constantly, do a whole lot of shopping, and generally just shake up my environment and life a bit. And I’ll of course be chronicling it all on the blog, so stay tuned for exciting updates and changes. I’m hoping to spice up the blog a bit, I’m a bit tired of the daily outfit posts; I love so many different things other than fashion, just posting pictures of myself every day isn’t quite varied enough for me.

Also, if there’s anything you’d like to see or know in particular, shoot me an email at lauren@shoe-gazing.com

Wearing a F21 faux fur vest, T by Alexander Wang tank, H&M bustier, various feathers, and Ann Demeulemeester wedge boots (my new favorites!).

It figures that the day after I write about incorporating more frills and colors into my wardrobe that I’d be wearing only black and white, but I couldn’t help but think that my new Ann Demeulemeester deserved to be worn (at least once) with Mlle. Demeulemeester’s signature black and white combination, despite the fact that I probably don’t look good in black (I’m very ok with that).

There’s something just so great about a white button-down shirt. I don’t actually own a simple, regular button-down, just some stolen men’s shirts from my dad’s closet, but they’re just so fun to throw on by themselves or with other pieces. I’m not too into the idea of staples that “everyone should have”, because that assumes too much of a dictatorial, authoritarian rule for fashion, but white shirts are definitely useful and good.

My new pony hair Ann Demeulemeester boots came today! I was so excited when Alex gave me the box, I put them on immediately and wore them all day; I didn’t even change. But it was fine, because these boots go with everything! I’ve been craving pony hair, and these are gorgeous. They’re also super comfy, despite being really stiff, I’m excited to wear them with everything.

They continue my obsession with hoof-like shoes, seeing as they’re fairly heavy and vaguely reminiscent of a horse’s rounded hoof. All my friends can’t stop touching them.
I’m a little guilty, because they sort of beg to be styled beautifully, but I didn’t even bother. There’s something about wearing a pair of shoes for the first time that makes you want to put together the best possible outfit for the shoes, a feeling which was trumped today by my insatiable desire to take a spin around campus in these beauties. They may not be all that dramatic, but they’re beautifully solid, fun boots to wear.

Soundtrack of the day: Drumming Song by Florence and the Machine (Boy 8 Bit remix)
Wearing: Gar-de jacket, vintage skirt, Ann Demeulemeester pony hair boots

Brought out one of my old feather headdresses. I haven’t worn this in months, but I love it too dearly to actually stop wearing it. I’ve never quite known why I love feathers so much (in my house I literally am ‘the feather girl’). I remember as a kid being so drawn to feathers, I’d pick them up off the ground on the beach or near the water, and my parents would tell me not to play with them because they were probably germ-ridden (and they were probably right), but I just couldn’t resist. Something about the texture of a feather is so different than fur, fabric, plastic, or, really, any other material. They have that sort of odd, natural beauty that I’ve always loved.

In high school, my preferences for material, color, and cut were constantly shifting, the way most people like things for a while, get sick of them, and move onto the next. But, as I’ve gotten older (yes, yes, I’m so old, I know), a small set of preferences has sort of emerged that hasn’t really changed. Call it the base of my style, maybe (although it doesn’t seem nearly basic or substantive enough to constitute the core of any kind of style), the elements of my style that (perhaps) won’t change too much in the future. It seems odd that something as ornamental and silly as feathers is a part of my long-term style (your base is supposed to be things like blazers and wool coats and LBD’s and things like that, isn’t it?), but of course it would be like me to construct a personal style vision out of entirely frivolous, unsubstantive things.

Wearing: vintage dress, handmade feather headdress, Chanel boots

But I wasn’t so into his spring shoes for Gap (they were too low!). They just weren’t as exciting as his neoprene sandals or other amazing creations. But I have to say I’m realllly liking these new fall Gap shoes. They’re a lot more Pierre Hardy-ish in silhouette, but they’re a little less loud, great to build outfits on. I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for the boots in grey (they’ll be available in beige, navy blue, khaki, and grey). And, since they’re Gap, they won’t be quite as expensive as regular Hardy’s. What do you think, would you wear them?
