Sparkle Sparkle
Being rather animalistic (bird-like, in this case), I do love shiny things. But, shiny, pretty, and fun as they are, I HATE sequins (plastic sequins, to be specific). Maybe it’s the trauma of those itchy, sequin-festooned dance costumes I was forced to wear for dance recitals as a child, maybe it’s the fact that they can sometimes be so glittery that they give me a headache, or maybe I just find them, for the most part, pretty ugly/tacky-looking. They don’t have the hefty, substantial feel of say, stones, beads or metal. I actually happen to love metal sequins: the cool, slick weight of them, their slightly more matte texture, their blunt, natural look. But plastic sequins? Count me out. Maybe it’s the fact that I generally see only cheap, 80’s type sequins that are all too reminiscent of my mom’s headache-inducing paillette tops (you don’t have to be Shiny to go clubbing, mom!!), creating a heuristic that rejects sequins automatically. That is, until I saw this Givenchy dress. Completely sequined-up, but for some reason it just looked beautiful to me. That emerald green color (my current weakness), the gradation, the tulle! My brain, drunk off of sequin-y goodness, told me, “Clearly, this is far superior to any other tacky sequin iteration!” “Yes, I agree, it is a veritable work of sparkly art.”
And so, against all odds, I now have a sequined dress.

Soundtrack: Shutterbugg by Big Boi, because I literally have not been able to stop listening to Sir Lucious Left Foot for about a month, and I’m loading up on as much American-ness as possible before I move. And nothing is more American than Outkast.
