Gar-de

22 December, 2009 (19:27)

I rarely wear jeans, and I rarely wear flats, so it seemed especially amusing to wear both today. But what I was really excited about is my new Gar-de jacket. Gar-de, a fashion collective based out of NYC, had a particularly great fall 2009 collection, full of utilitarian shapes and fabrics, androgynous cuts, and generally great jackets. I have a love for fashion collectives, especially one whose goal is to create clothes that are “subversive and considered, conceptually grounded and idiosyncratic”.

The nice thing about this jacket, and Gar-de’s clothes in general, is that they aren’t wildly and intensely conceptual, they push the envelope gently, which is nice in a world where pushing the envelope might be getting a little out of hand. I think one of the more important aspect of clothes, no matter how much they’re trying to expand horizons, is that they’re considered, that they aren’t made without thought behind them. I don’t think trying to make clothes as “crazy” as possible is the mark of clothing that pushes boundaries, it’s clothes that make you consider, think, clothes with a good viewpoint behind them (not random leather eye patches and rampant pantlessness).
